Antonio Guterres Warns Two-State Solution is Being Systematically Erased

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned world leaders during the 81st UN General Assembly in New York that the foundations for a future Palestinian state are being "systematically erased." Speaking at a high-level meeting titled "The Road Ahead," Guterres identified illegal Israeli settlement expansion, annexation, and rising settler violence in the occupied West Bank as primary threats. He specifically cited the E1 settlement plan as a potential "deathblow" to Palestinian statehood and cautioned that forced displacements are "raising the specter of ethnic cleansing."

Guterres urged the international community to implement the Trump Peace Plan and ensure Gaza and the West Bank remain unified under a single sovereign government. He characterized settlement policies as a "flagrant violation of international law" and argued there is "simply no alternative" to a two-state solution based on pre-1967 lines.

Beyond the Israel-Palestine conflict, Guterres criticized the UN Security Council's inability to pass binding resolutions due to permanent member vetoes, stating this creates an "environment of impunity." The assembly convened amid broader institutional instability, with U.S. President Donald Trump establishing a separate "Board of Peace" and denying a visa to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who addressed the body via video. Other leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, used the forum to push for tighter sanctions against Russia, while Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the assembly for bilateral talks with Trump.
