Trump Boycotts G20 Summit Over South Africa Human Rights Claims

President Donald Trump boycotted the G20 summit in Johannesburg, leading to a diplomatic standoff over the presidency handover and the summit's final declaration.

President Donald Trump boycotted the G20 summit in Johannesburg, citing unacceptable policies regarding the alleged persecution of white farmers in South Africa. The U.S. administration further strained relations by pressuring South Africa to forgo a joint summit declaration, arguing that the American absence precluded consensus. Despite this, over 42 nations adopted a declaration focused on debt sustainability, energy transition, and disaster resilience.

A diplomatic standoff emerged over the G20 presidency handover. The U.S. proposed that a chargé d'affaires lead an eight-member team to receive the baton, which South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his officials rejected as a breach of protocol. South Africa insisted the handover occur between officials of equivalent rank. The dispute eventually shifted the ceremony from the leaders' summit to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation offices in Pretoria, scheduled for the week of November 24.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Ramaphosa for his comments about the U.S. absence, while Ramaphosa asserted that the G20 process would move forward and would not be bullied. Despite these tensions and a 30% U.S. tariff on South African imports imposed in August, South African Trade Minister Parks Tau stated that the two nations have compartmentalized the G20 dispute to allow bilateral trade negotiations to continue.
