India and Pakistan Clash Over Operation Sindoor Anniversary

India and Pakistan commemorate the first anniversary of a May 2025 military conflict, exchanging warnings and contradictory claims regarding the outcome of Operation Sindoor.

India and Pakistan marked the first anniversary of a high-intensity military conflict in May 2026, revealing deeply divergent narratives of the 2025 engagement. The conflict began on May 7, 2025, when Narendra Modi authorized Operation Sindoor in response to an April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. India reports that its tri-services campaign destroyed nine terror launchpads and 11 Pakistani airbases, neutralizing over 100 terrorists from groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Pakistan, characterizing the conflict as Marka-e-Haq, claims a decisive victory through Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos. Pakistani officials assert they downed several Indian fighter jets, including Rafales, and struck 26 Indian military targets. Hostilities ended on May 10, 2025, following a ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, though India maintains the truce was negotiated directly via military-to-military channels.

One year later, India has maintained a proactive posture, keeping the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and establishing new specialized combat formations. In Jaipur, Indian military leaders warned that no terror sanctuary across the Line of Control is safe. Conversely, Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir warned that any future military misadventure would result in consequences that are extremely widespread and painful. Diplomatic tensions remain high, with India recently rebuking China for providing technical assistance to Pakistan during the 2025 strikes.
