Russia Negotiates Transfer of S-400 Systems From Turkey

The Russian government is negotiating the transfer of S-400 missile systems from Turkey to another friendly nation to help Turkey rejoin the F-35 program.

The Federal Government of Russia is coordinating the rebasing of Russian-made S-400 missile-defense systems from Turkey to another friendly country. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that relevant work and contacts are currently underway to facilitate the move.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow is prepared to transfer the systems upon request to a responsible nation that maintains friendly relations with Russia. The move is intended to resolve a diplomatic and military impasse between Turkey and the United States. Washington previously sanctioned Turkey under the CAATSA act and blocked its participation in the F-35 fighter jet program after Turkey acquired the S-400s in 2017.

U.S. officials have argued that the presence of the S-400 systems could compromise F-35 technology and undermine NATO air defense compatibility. However, President Donald Trump indicated during a July NATO summit in Ankara that he is considering allowing Turkey to rejoin the F-35 program, provided the missile systems are removed.
