Democrats Gain Senate Control to Shield Federal Reserve
Democrats secured a midterm victory and Senate control, limiting President Donald Trump's ability to appoint allies to the Federal Reserve or replace Governor Lisa Cook.
A sweeping midterm victory has granted Democrats control of the U.S. Senate, strengthening the independence of the Federal Reserve against efforts by Donald Trump to install political allies on its seven-member board. This shift places the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee under Democratic leadership.
Senator Elizabeth Warren is expected to chair the Senate Banking Committee. Warren may launch investigations into Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's past asset dispositions and challenge his current inflation mandate. These new congressional dynamics are likely to complicate administration-led regulatory reforms and the implementation of the Genius Act regarding stablecoins, which were supported by Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman.
President Trump continues to pressure the Federal Reserve to drastically cut interest rates. He is currently pursuing an administrative procedure to fire Governor Lisa Cook, citing errors on mortgage applications. However, the Democrat-led Senate is unlikely to confirm any replacement for Cook, effectively blocking the president's attempt to reshape the board.
