Trump Lists India as Major Drug Transit Country

Donald Trump included India on the United States list of major drug transit or illicit drug-producing countries for fiscal 2027. The classification is based on geographic, commercial, and economic factors rather than a failure to combat the illegal drug trade.

Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for their work to address illicit opium poppy cultivation and bolster supply chain integrity. India was not categorized among the four nations—Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burma, and Colombia—that the administration identified as having demonstrably failed to meet international counternarcotics obligations.

India remains on the list alongside other nations, including China and Pakistan. The United States and India will continue to cooperate through the United States-India Drug Policy Framework to target drug trafficking, pharmaceutical supply chain security, and the flow of precursor chemicals.
