Pakistan Interior Minister Visits Tehran Amid US-Iran Tensions

Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran on September 21, 2026, for high-level talks with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. The discussions focused on implementing previous leadership-level agreements, mutual cooperation, and regional security developments. During the visit, Naqvi invited Momeni to visit Islamabad and committed to further strengthening ties between the two nations.

The visit occurred as Pakistan attempted to manage its role as a regional mediator between Iran and the United States. While Naqvi and Field Marshal Asim Munir have previously sought to revive stalled peace negotiations and address Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei denied that Naqvi was carrying any specific proposal or message from Washington. Baqaei stated the visit remained strictly within the framework of bilateral relations.

Simultaneously, Iran has hardened its position toward the United States. Security official Mohsen Rezaei and Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf announced that Tehran conveyed specific conditions to Washington via Qatar for restarting negotiations. These demands include an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen assets, and the cessation of the U.S. naval blockade. These developments follow the collapse of a June memorandum of understanding over security guarantees and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which led to military strikes in July. President Donald Trump has indicated he is weighing options for Iran, including continued economic targeting, regime destruction, or a deal.
