Trump Launches 'Economic D-Day' Sanctions Campaign Against Iran

President Donald Trump initiated a massive financial offensive to isolate Iran, prompting Tehran to threaten the blockade of oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have launched a massive financial offensive against Iran, termed an "economic D-Day." Described as the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary, the campaign aims to sever all remaining economic lifelines to the Iranian regime and force Tehran back to negotiations to end a six-month war. The U.S. has warned that any nation serving as a financial artery for Iran will face unprecedented economic isolation.

Iran has responded with severe threats and domestic instability. Security chief Mohsen Rezaei warned that any country supporting the U.S. operation would be viewed as an enemy and that Iran would target their interests. Rezaei further threatened to halt all oil exports through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime data already shows a significant drop in commercial traffic through the Strait, with some reports indicating single-digit vessel numbers due to risks of naval mines.

Internally, President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged that Iran is in a full-scale economic, military, and security war, admitting that citizens face severe hardships, including medication shortages and hyperinflation. The Iranian rial has fallen to an all-time low, and the United Arab Emirates has suspended all financial transactions with Tehran. While Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi pledged to leverage BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to resist pressure, the 60-day window for a peace accord under a June memorandum of understanding has expired without agreement.
