Trump Weighs Ceasefire as US-Iran Conflict Escalates

President Donald Trump is deciding between implementing a 10-day ceasefire to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or launching a full-scale coordinated military campaign with Israel against Iran. The decision comes after ten consecutive days of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian cities and retaliatory attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps on U.S. assets. Trump recently authorized a fresh round of strikes and declared that Tehran "will pay" for the deaths of three U.S. soldiers.

The conflict, now in its fifth month, has expanded to include Iranian strikes on Kuwait and maritime instability. Yemen-based Houthi rebels announced a naval blockade on Saudi Arabian maritime traffic in the Red Sea, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to implement protective measures. Additionally, an unidentified projectile hit a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, while both the U.S. and Iran have enforced naval restrictions in the waterway.

Global markets have reacted with volatility. Crude oil prices slipped to $88.87 per barrel on hopes of a ceasefire, while gold traded around $4,000 an ounce. Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency warned that disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait could trigger a global energy crisis, particularly impacting developing nations where fuel costs are already prohibitive.
