Bessent Leads G20 Meeting to Isolate Iran and China

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hosted G20 finance leaders in Asheville to push a pro-market growth agenda and launch weekly sanctions against Iran.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hosted G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 30 to September 1, 2026. Bessent utilized the summit to advance a pro-market economic agenda centered on deregulation, energy production, and the correction of global trade imbalances. A primary focus was the launch of Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign to isolate Iran through weekly secondary sanctions targeting financial institutions. Bessent warned that the U.S. would employ financial violence to force the Iranian regime to capitulate, specifically targeting banks that facilitate transactions with Tehran.

Trade tensions dominated the deliberations, as Bessent urged G20 members to review trade terms with China to address Beijing's $1.2 trillion trade surplus. While the U.S. and China are preparing for a late September summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, Bessent indicated that sanctions against Beijing remain an option. Simultaneously, the U.S. faced friction with Canada and the European Union over aggressive tariffs imposed on 60 economies following a Supreme Court ruling.

Internal U.S. policy divergences emerged between Bessent, who sought to lower borrowing costs to manage $40 trillion in national debt, and Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, who prioritized combating inflation. International delegates, including German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, criticized U.S. protectionism and the economic instability caused by conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. The meetings, held at the Omni Grove Park Inn to highlight Asheville's recovery from Hurricane Helene, serve as a precursor to the G20 leaders' summit in Miami this December.
