Former Indian Governor and Educationist D.Y. Patil Dies at 92

Former Governor of West Bengal, Bihar, and Tripura Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil died on August 4, 2026, at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Patil, a veteran Congress leader and Padma Shri awardee, passed away from age-related health complications and prolonged illness at the age of 92.

Patil's career spanned politics and academia, serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1978 before holding several high constitutional offices. He founded the D.Y. Patil Group, a vast private education network comprising over 182 institutions and seven deemed universities specializing in medicine, engineering, and healthcare.

Following his death, political leaders across the spectrum issued tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his commitment to philanthropy and the poor, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted his dedication to societal welfare. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Piyush Goyal recognized his contributions to nation-building and governance, noting his rise from an ordinary worker to a high-ranking official. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and NCP SP President Sharad Pawar described him as a visionary whose work in health and education would inspire future generations.
