US Markets Plummet as Fed Divides and Trump Threatens Iran

US stock markets crashed after the Federal Reserve maintained interest rates amid internal dissent, while President Donald Trump vowed military retaliation against Iran following missile attacks.

US stock markets plummeted on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve maintained the federal funds rate at 3.5% to 3.75% in a fractured 9-3 vote. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,153 points, and the Nasdaq Composite entered correction territory. The decision saw significant internal opposition, with Presidents Lorie Logan, Beth Hammack, and Neel Kashkari dissenting in favor of a 25-basis-point hike to combat inflation. This level of dissent is the highest for a Fed leader so early in their tenure since 1970.

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh defended the hold but faced investor backlash for declining to provide a clear roadmap or forward guidance for future rate moves. This communication gap pushed 30-year Treasury yields toward two-decade highs and led JPMorgan Chase & Co. to move its predicted rate hike timeline forward to December 2026. Market losses were most severe among AI-linked semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia and Micron.

Simultaneously, geopolitical instability exacerbated the downturn. President Donald Trump vowed a forceful military response after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at US assets in Jordan. While US Central Command reported all missiles were intercepted, the US and Saudi Arabia subsequently struck Tehran-backed militias in Iraq. Brent crude oil prices surged up to 8 percent, reaching approximately $90 per barrel, as fighting resumed. Additionally, Hims & Hers Health saw its stock drop 14.7 percent following FTC allegations regarding the mishandling of consumer health data.
