Mark Carney Reaffirms Support for Ukraine and Criticizes U.S.-Russia Deal
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed support for Ukraine and criticized a U.S.-Russia diesel agreement that he claims finances the Russian war effort.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 11, 2026, to reaffirm Canada's solidarity and support for Ukraine's sovereignty. The leaders called for Russia to immediately stop strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and discussed increasing coordination with allies to enhance air defense support, building on a recent $355 million Canadian commitment.
During the call, Carney criticized a new agreement between the United States and Russia to supply millions of tonnes of diesel to the U.S. He stated the deal provides revenue to finance Russia's war and opposes efforts to create stability in Europe.
Carney assured President Zelenskyy that Canada will maintain and potentially tighten its existing 3,500 sanctions against Russia. To date, Canada has provided over $8.5 billion in military support and $750 million for recovery and reconstruction.
