The Spike Wasn't Dated to the Vote. Everything Else Was.

The gas crisis is real and self-inflicted, but everything the White House has staged in front of voters about it is dated to November 3.

He said the date out loud.

We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd. — Donald Trump

Not a leak, not a reading of a deployment schedule. The next round of the war has a start line, spoken in the president's own voice, and a three-day campaign against Iran's energy sites, arsenals and military positions is provisioned to run on the other side of it. [1] The freeze has soft edges. Days later he was floating a strike within the week, and when asked which way he would go, his answer kept both options open. [2]

We may do another little Epic Fury, or they'll agree. — Donald Trump

The same date runs through everything the White House has put in front of voters this month. Start with the rescue. The emergency is 400,000 barrels out of a reserve already drawn to its lowest level since 1982, beside a Russian diesel deal announced before the vote whose published schedule lands most of its cargo after it, and a tanker of Venezuelan crude staged for cameras at Port Arthur beside a Senate campaign. [3][4][5] Chevron's downstream chief said in April what the tanker could not say in October. [6]

When things do get back to normal, that additional supply out of Venezuela will actually translate to lower prices for Americans. So it will in the future, but it isn't having an impact now. — Andy Walz

After a month of all of it, pump prices set records anyway: $4.33 for regular, $6.33 for diesel. [7] His own ambassador to the United Nations puts the war behind those prices at least another year out. [8]

the US could end the war with Iran quickly — Donald Trump

Then the blame. The diesel shortage was pinned on Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries, even as energy analysts named the U.S.-Iran war and the Hormuz closure as the primary driver of the price. [4] Zelensky refused the demand that he stop hitting Russian fuel. [9]

our lives are more important than the price of energy — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The administration then waived sanctions to buy the diesel from Russia itself. [4] And the companies doing the buying have now been told what the law makes of the imports. [10]

Those who choose to act in this way proceed at their own risk and will undoubtedly be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, whether in this Administration — or the next. — Jamie Raskin

Up to twenty years, whether in this administration or the next. A rescue that may not outlast the vote it serves. And the credit. In one room he told an oil-and-gas audience what four-dollar gas is worth. [5]

The United States oil and gas business is making hundreds of billions of dollars … because of what’s happening in the Middle East … trillions of dollars. — Donald Trump

In the next breath, the war became a windfall for that same industry.

And it’s a small price to pay for taking a nuclear weapon away from maniacs. — Donald Trump

To voters, a different sentence entirely. [11]

And when it does, you’re going to see the biggest drop in oil that anyone’s ever seen. — Donald Trump

The tempting reading is that the whole thing was engineered, a spike manufactured so a rescue could be sold. The record runs the other way. The Hormuz blockade was built, in the administration's own account, to squeeze Iran while trying to keep global prices from spiking. [12] Since March the government has spent or lent 225 million barrels out of a reserve now at its lowest since 1982, and its party has been bleeding over pump prices since May, when a clear majority of voters, nearly two-thirds of independents among them, said they were reconsidering the party. [3][13] A White House that wanted four-dollar gas did not spend spring and summer fighting it. The spike is real, it is self-inflicted, and it was never scheduled. What was scheduled is everything the public could see. The coupling runs past fuel. A review of disaster relief found the administration approved more than three-quarters of requests from states that voted for the president, and under half from the rest. [14] Asked about recovery money for a state whose Senate race is in doubt, he answered plainly.

Clearly, President Trump and Congressman Tiffany are continuing to play politics with emergency aid that’s meant to help communities recover in the wake of disasters like tornadoes and floods. — Tony Evers

The spine of the whole pattern is not inference or leak. It is sentences, said on the record, by the president himself: a start date for the war's next round, a price and a windfall named for two different audiences, a promise offered in exchange for a vote.
