Trump and Zelenskyy Coordinate Peace Push Ahead of Geneva Talks

President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are coordinating a step-by-step diplomatic approach to elevate peace negotiations with Russia to a leaders-level summit.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a 30-minute phone call on February 25, 2026, to coordinate a sequence of diplomatic steps aimed at ending the war. Trump expressed a desire to conclude the conflict within a month, while Zelenskyy emphasized that moving negotiations to the leaders' level is the only way to resolve sensitive territorial issues and political will. Both leaders agreed that upcoming trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in early March should pave the way for a direct summit between the heads of state.

Following the call, Ukrainian lead negotiator Rustem Umerov met with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Geneva on February 26. The parties discussed prisoner-of-war exchanges and a "prosperity package" for postwar reconstruction, with Ukraine seeking approximately $800 billion in funding. Simultaneously, Russian economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev met with U.S. officials in Geneva to discuss economic issues. These diplomatic efforts coincided with a massive Russian missile and drone offensive targeting Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih.

Despite the push for diplomacy, negotiations remain deadlocked over the Donbas region. Russia demands full control of the Donetsk region, while Ukraine refuses to cede territory and continues to seek security guarantees. While some U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham, argue for increasing military leverage via Tomahawk cruise missiles, the Trump administration continues to broker these trilateral efforts to reach a breakthrough.
