Zelenskyy Secures Missile Aid at Ukraine Independence Summit

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hosted a summit of the Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv on August 24, 2026, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. During the event, Zelenskyy rejected Russian demands for territorial concessions in the Donbas, stating that Ukraine seeks peace but will not surrender. He highlighted a critical missile deficit, noting that Patriot interceptor deliveries dropped from 675 in 2023 to a projected 264 in 2026, and requested at least 300 additional missiles.

In response, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the British government would authorize the defense firm MBDA to release classified data on SCALP long-range missile components, enabling Ukraine and France to establish local production. Simultaneously, the European Union released a 6.1 billion euro military aid package for air and missile defense. Other support included a 9 billion dollar pledge for 2027 from Norway and a 90 billion euro loan from the EU to address a 27 billion dollar military budget deficit.

Diplomatic tensions emerged as U.S. President Donald Trump walked back a previous promise to provide licenses for Ukraine to build its own Patriot missiles. The celebrations were attended by leaders including European Council President António Costa and Moldovan President Maia Sandu, while Russian forces continued strikes on Kharkiv, Odesa, and the port of Pivdennyi. Ukraine responded with drone attacks on Russian logistics and defense plants in Krasnodar and Rostov.
