Trump Pauses Canadian Tariffs After Tentative Trade Deal

Donald Trump suspended planned 50% tariffs on billions in Canadian goods for three days following a tentative agreement to resolve disputes over dairy, alcohol, and autos.

President Donald Trump paused the implementation of 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion to $28 billion of Canadian imports just hours before a midnight deadline on August 19, 2026. The proposed levies, invoked under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, targeted a wide range of products including hockey sticks, cement, honey, and wine. Trump cited Canadian provincial bans on American alcohol, dairy supply management, and automotive quotas as the primary justifications for the measures.

The reprieve followed intensive negotiations in Washington between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump announced the three-day pause on Truth Social, claiming the two nations have a deal subject to the finalization of documents. He specifically suggested the Keystone XL pipeline, previously canceled by Joe Biden, might be revived as part of the resolution. While Trump characterized the result as a very good deal for both parties, Carney noted that while substantial progress had been made, important work remains.

Under the tentative pact, the U.S. may reduce sectoral tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 50% to 25% and lower duties on Canadian-built vehicles from 25% to 15%. In exchange, Canada has committed to removing trade barriers, including provincial boycotts of U.S. wine and spirits. Canadian officials confirmed that the country's dairy supply management regime remains intact. Negotiators are working to finalize the official documentation before a Saturday deadline to avoid the implementation of the tariffs.
