Trump Administration Pushes for Ukraine Peace Deal by Year-End

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced a target to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by the end of 2025. Witkoff is meeting with Ukrainian representatives in New York this week to discuss a peace proposal already on the table, noting that technical teams are currently working to identify the necessary components for a settlement.

These diplomatic efforts follow an August 15 summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and an August 18 meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington. Vice President JD Vance stated that Russia has made concessions, including acknowledging security guarantees for Ukraine's territorial integrity and abandoning demands to install a puppet regime in Kyiv. However, Russia continues to demand Ukraine's neutrality regarding NATO and the formal recognition of several occupied regions as Russian territories.

While the Trump administration suggests a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated there are currently no plans for such a summit, questioning Zelenskyy's legitimacy due to his expired presidential mandate. Donald Trump dismissed these claims as "bull****." Despite the diplomatic push, military escalation continues, with recent drone attacks targeting energy facilities in Poltava and Sumy, Ukraine, and apartment buildings in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.
