Trump Threatens to Annex Greenland Sparking NATO Crisis

President Donald Trump has declared the acquisition of Greenland a national security priority, asserting the U.S. must control the territory to prevent Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Trump has stated he prefers a diplomatic deal—including potential purchase offers or payments to residents to encourage secession—but has repeatedly refused to rule out the use of military force, warning he would take the island the hard way if necessary. This rhetoric intensified following a U.S. military operation in Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro.

Denmark and Greenland have categorically rejected these demands, stating the territory is not for sale. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a U.S. military attack on a NATO ally would effectively end the alliance and dismantle the post-World War II security architecture. In response, Denmark launched Operation Arctic Endurance, increasing its military presence and requesting assistance from European allies. France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, and Finland have since deployed reconnaissance teams and military assets to Greenland to signal solidarity and deter unilateral U.S. action.

Diplomatic efforts reached a stalemate during high-level meetings in Washington between U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Danish and Greenlandic ministers. While the parties agreed to form a high-level working group to address security concerns, a fundamental disagreement over sovereignty remains. Within the U.S., the proposal has polarized Congress; some Republicans introduced legislation to annex Greenland as the 51st state, while a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the NATO Unity Protection Act to block federal funding for any unauthorized seizure of ally territory.
