Zelenskyy Condemns Russian Strikes Amid Trump Energy Ceasefire

Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Western allies for failing to provide early warnings of Russian missile strikes that hit Kyiv's energy grid despite a U.S.-brokered energy ceasefire.

Russian forces launched a massive aerial barrage of over 100 drones and ballistic missiles against Ukraine on October 13 and 14, 2026. The strikes targeted civilian infrastructure and energy facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and Rivne, leaving 600,000 people without power and killing at least six people. In Kharkiv, a residential building was destroyed, killing four people. The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation claimed the strikes targeted military-industrial sites and a data center in Kyiv, while denying they targeted energy facilities.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the attacks as a deliberate violation of an energy ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine received no early warnings from international partners regarding the ballistic missile strikes, calling the intelligence gap absolutely unjust. This sparked speculation that the Trump administration had cut off intelligence sharing after threatening to restrict support if Ukraine continued attacking Russian oil refineries.

Donald Trump denied that intelligence sharing had stopped but maintained that the energy ceasefire was in effect because he mandated it. Trump linked the truce to a deal with Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel to lower U.S. fuel prices, a move criticized by some U.S. senators and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While Ukrainian officials attributed the missing alerts to the specific weaponry used by Russia, Zelenskyy argued that Russia's actions showed ostentatious disrespect toward the United States.
