US and Russia Discuss Limited Ukraine Ceasefire and Summit

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States is open to exploring a limited ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine specifically covering grain and energy. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Rubio noted that both nations have expressed interest in such an arrangement, an idea previously raised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While Rubio cautioned that these talks are not yet a breakthrough, he suggested a limited agreement could alleviate global pressure and serve as a starting point for broader negotiations.

As part of this diplomatic push, Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev traveled to New York on Wednesday to meet with Trump administration representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks, scheduled during the UN General Assembly, follow a September 5 meeting at the Kremlin and focus on economic cooperation, energy issues, and a peaceful settlement for the war in Ukraine.

Simultaneously, the United States extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend a G20 summit in Miami, Florida, in December. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that no decision has been made regarding the summit and that it is premature to determine an agenda. Peskov emphasized that Russia is pursuing a permanent peace settlement rather than a temporary ceasefire.
