UK Trade Unions Urge Prime Minister to End Iran War

Ten UK trade unions representing more than 2.3 million workers have called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to pressure US President Donald Trump to end the war with Iran. The unions, including Unison and the National Education Union, demand that the UK government revoke US permission to launch airstrikes from RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia. They argue the conflict has increased annual British household energy bills by £221 while boosting oil company profits.

Ed Miliband, the UK Foreign Secretary, met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington to discuss the crisis. Miliband stated that the UK has not joined offensive actions but has permitted the use of its bases for the defense of Gulf allies. He identified securing a lasting ceasefire as a priority to address the domestic cost of living crisis.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has vowed to give Iran one last chance following a period of heavy bombing by both sides. Marco Rubio reported progress in discussions involving Iran and Oman regarding shipping security in the strait of Hormuz.
