Trump Imposes Global Reciprocal Tariffs on 90+ Nations

President Donald Trump implemented sweeping reciprocal tariffs on over 90 countries to reduce trade deficits, triggering global market volatility and legal challenges over presidential authority.

President Donald Trump implemented a sweeping global trade strategy on August 7, 2025, imposing reciprocal tariffs on more than 90 trading partners. The measures, which range from a 10% baseline to 50% for specific nations, aim to reduce U.S. trade deficits and reshore manufacturing. The administration secured preliminary frameworks with the European Union, Japan, and South Korea—capping most duties at 15% in exchange for massive U.S. investments and energy purchases—while applying steeper levies on others. Brazil faces 50% tariffs, partly due to the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and India faces 25% duties over its ties to Russia.

Negotiations yielded mixed results across Asia. Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia secured 19% rates after Trump leveraged trade talks to broker a ceasefire in a deadly border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Conversely, Canada saw tariffs rise to 35% effective August 1, which the White House attributed to failures in curbing fentanyl trafficking and Canada's intent to recognize a Palestinian state. Mexico received a 90-day extension to avoid a proposed 30% hike.

Economic fallout has been immediate, with the Federal Reserve noting rising inflation for imported goods and major automakers like General Motors and Toyota projecting billions in losses. The administration also suspended the de minimis exemption for low-cost imports effective August 29 to target e-commerce giants like Temu and Shein. These actions face ongoing legal challenges in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where judges have questioned the legality of using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to bypass congressional approval.
