Canada and India Advance Trade Deal and Uranium Pact
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with Indian leaders to finalize a trade agreement and secure a $2.6 billion uranium supply deal.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited India on October 14-15, 2026, to strengthen bilateral ties through meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The discussions centered on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which Anand indicated could be concluded by the end of the year. Both nations are working toward a goal of doubling annual two-way trade to $70 billion by 2030.
The diplomatic engagement included a review of security, technology, and energy cooperation, highlighted by a $2.6 billion uranium supply agreement between Cameco and India. This push for cooperation follows a period of strained relations resulting from the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Canada in December. This upcoming trip follows a productive telephonic conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who reaffirmed Canada's commitment to the CEPA. International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu also supported the effort by leading the Team Canada Trade Mission to India.
