Trump Plans 2027 India Visit to Finalize Trade Deal
President Donald Trump plans to visit India in early 2027 as the U.S. and India move to finalize a bilateral trade agreement.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Sergio Gor announced that Donald Trump plans to visit India in early 2027, marking his first trip to the country since February 2020. Rubio intends to visit India before the end of 2026 to prepare for the presidential mission. The visit is designed to coincide with the conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement that has been negotiated over the last 18 months.
Ambassador Gor stated that the trade deal is nearing completion, with only a handful of issues remaining. Negotiators are currently finalizing legal language to expand market access and reduce tariffs. The diplomatic push follows a period of strain caused by U.S. tariffs exceeding 50% on Indian imports and disputes regarding a ceasefire during Operation Sindoor. While the Trump administration views the deal as a way to strengthen economic cooperation, some Indian opposition figures warn it could harm domestic farmers.
Beyond trade, the U.S. is expanding strategic cooperation with India in defense, energy, critical minerals, and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. Rubio praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, describing India as a rising global power and a close strategic partner. Officials noted that the personal friendship between Trump and Modi is a critical driver of these diplomatic results.
