Trump Pursues Iran Deal Amid Drone Strikes and Israeli Pressure

President Donald Trump is pursuing a negotiated settlement with Iran via Qatari mediators while the IRGC downs three U.S. drones near the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism on Monday regarding a negotiated settlement with Iran to end a conflict lasting nearly nine months. The diplomatic push involves a Qatari-led draft agreement focused on lifting a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports in exchange for Iran ceasing attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump indicated that a deal is possible and ruled out immediate military strikes following the November 3 midterm elections, though he maintained that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a fundamental requirement.

Diplomatic efforts have expanded to include Russian President Vladimir Putin, who held talks with Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei. In Doha and Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Qatari mediators discussed a seven-step plan. While President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei authorized the government to pursue a deal, Araghchi warned that the Strait of Hormuz would only reopen if U.S. conditions are met first.

Despite these signals, military tensions remain high. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the downing of three U.S. drones near the Strait of Hormuz, including one MQ-9 and two MQM-170s. Simultaneously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pressed the Trump administration to abandon diplomacy in favor of renewed air strikes. In response to such threats, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei ordered that any U.S. or Israeli aggression be met with immediate responses without geographic limits.
