Trump Envoys Travel to Russia to Secure Prisoner Release
President Donald Trump is negotiating with Vladimir Putin to free detained Americans and establish a ceasefire framework for the war in Ukraine.
The Donald Trump administration is nearing a deal with Russia to secure the release of multiple detained Americans, including Stephen James Hubbard, a Michigan teacher sentenced to over six years in a Russian penal colony on mercenary charges. Trump confirmed he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Hubbard's release and has formally asked for his return.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and advisor Jared Kushner are leading the negotiations and are scheduled to travel to Russia on Wednesday to meet with Putin. Before this trip, Witkoff held talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and representatives from Norway and Finland. Those discussions focused on a comprehensive peace framework, including a partial ceasefire for food and energy infrastructure and security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on NATO's Article 5.
Diplomatic tensions have risen as Trump pressures Zelensky to settle the war, stating that "Ukraine has to want to settle this war." To lower domestic fuel prices, Trump has waived sanctions on Russian officials and secured a deal to purchase diesel from Moscow. While Zelensky expressed gratitude for strong American security guarantees, disputes persist over the delivery of Patriot interceptors and the functionality of Starlink systems on drones. Meanwhile, Russia has intensified strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and cargo vessels, while Ukraine continues to target Russian oil refineries.
