James Talarico Wins Historic Texas Senate Seat

Democrat James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton in the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history, flipping a seat Republicans held for decades.

Democratic state representative James Talarico won the Texas U.S. Senate race on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. The victory marks the first time a Democrat has won a statewide Senate seat in Texas since 1988. Talarico won by more than a million votes, contributing to a broader Democratic breakthrough in the state that included the defeat of Governor Greg Abbott.

The contest became the most expensive non-presidential race in U.S. history, with combined advertising expenditures exceeding $573 million. Billionaire Elon Musk spent between $212 million and $224 million supporting Paxton, including $47 million via his America PAC specifically targeting Talarico. Talarico campaigned on a populist platform, framing the race as a struggle against billionaire influence and corruption.

Prior to the election, Talarico expressed a willingness to work with President Donald Trump on bipartisan issues such as healthcare and housing. Trump and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed these overtures as disingenuous, with Trump accusing Talarico of wanting to dismantle capitalism. Following the result, Elon Musk mocked his failed investment on X, stating his "election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time."

Ken Paxton conceded the race, describing the night as difficult for Republicans. Senator John Cornyn, whom Paxton had previously accused of wanting him to lose, congratulated Talarico and offered assistance with his transition. Talarico celebrated the win by declaring it "Time to start flipping tables."
