Ukraine Strikes Russian Energy and Logistics in Massive Drone Campaign

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine launched a massive overnight drone and missile campaign across 15 Russian regions and occupied Crimea on August 26, 2026. The strikes targeted critical energy and logistics infrastructure, including the Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery in Kstovo and a major Wildberries e-commerce facility in Kotovsk. The Wildberries hub suffered a fire covering over 100,000 square meters, completely destroying the 1.1 million square foot facility. Ukrainian officials justified the attacks on Wildberries by claiming the company provides technical components to the Russian military.

Russian officials reported at least three deaths and 19 injuries across the Lipetsk, Belgorod, and Tambov regions. In Moscow, at least 10 drones were intercepted, causing flight restrictions at three international airports. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 426 Ukrainian craft, though these figures remain unverified. Simultaneously, the Military of Russia launched 162 drones into Ukraine, killing a woman and a 4-year-old girl in Chernihiv.

The escalation followed a surprise visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe on August 25. Ukraine had previously agreed to a U.S. request to halt strikes on the capital during his stay, resuming the campaign hours after his departure. Amid the violence, President Vladimir Putin warned that strikes on Russian economic targets would be met with responses targeting Ukraine's most sensitive economic sectors. Kremlin insiders indicate that Moscow may intensify ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv following the collapse of peace negotiations.
