Trump and Iran Negotiate Strait of Hormuz Reopening in New York

President Donald Trump and Iranian officials held a series of mediated talks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York to resolve a seven-month standoff. The discussions, facilitated by Qatar, focused on a phased agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran proposed reopening the waterway within seven days if the United States first lifts its economic blockade, releases frozen assets, and ends hostilities.

Trump described the meetings involving special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as very productive, though he suggested a final deal might only be reached after the November 3 midterm elections. In a General Assembly speech, Trump presented a stark choice for the regime, questioning if he should allow Iran to rebuild or "annihilate the Islamic republic" quickly to prevent further destruction.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian maintained that military pressure would not force submission, though he reaffirmed that the June 18 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding remains acceptable to Tehran. Despite the diplomatic overtures, Iranian security officials issued a short-term ultimatum to Washington, and some military figures warned of potential new fronts in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged restraint, emphasizing his country's role as a mediator in the peace process.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that any lasting agreement would require significant time and hard work. While some U.S. officials characterized the current discussions as positive, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi faces potential impeachment at home over his conduct during the negotiations.
