Poland and India Resolve Oil Disputes and Boost Strategic Ties

Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski reaffirmed strategic cooperation with India and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with preventing Russian nuclear escalation in Ukraine.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski visited New Delhi from July 13 to 15, 2026, to strengthen the India-Poland Strategic Partnership. During high-level meetings with Indian officials, including Secretary (West) Sibi George, Bartoszewski announced that Poland and India have resolved their differences regarding India's imports of discounted Russian oil. While Warsaw previously feared these purchases fueled Russia's war economy, both nations now acknowledge the economic necessity of the trade.

Bartoszewski praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an accomplished global leader, asserting that he is one of the few people capable of exerting influence over Vladimir Putin. He specifically credited Modi with preventing the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine during late 2022. This diplomatic alignment comes as both nations prepare for a planned visit to India by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to enhance defense and economic cooperation.

On security matters, Bartoszewski reaffirmed Poland's zero tolerance for terrorism, including attacks on Indian territory, and supported India's balanced approach to the West Asia conflict. He emphasized that international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca, must remain open. Additionally, he called for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region regarding water infrastructure and the protection of underwater cables following sabotage incidents in the Baltic Sea.
