Donald Trump Claims Iran Deal Nears as Strait Attacks Continue

Donald Trump announced on August 7, 2026, that the war with Iran is nearing an end, stating he is involved in negotiations and believes Tehran cannot sustain the confrontation much longer. Trump expressed optimism that a resolution would cause oil and gasoline prices to drop sharply. He noted that while he prefers a deal to avoid casualties, military action remains an option, referencing a massive attack he paused after Iranian officials requested talks.

Despite these claims, Iran has denied direct talks with the U.S., asserting it is communicating solely through Oman. Iran and Oman recently finalized a management scheme for the Strait of Hormuz that reportedly bars U.S. and Israeli vessels from the waterway. Tensions remain high as Iranian forces recently struck targets on Qeshm island, and an Iranian missile hit an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company vessel in the strait on Saturday. Another commercial vessel near Oman also reported being hit.

The conflict follows a period of escalation including U.S. strikes inside Iran and Iranian retaliatory attacks on U.S. facilities in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait. While the U.S. Navy maintains a blockade on Iranian ports, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed Trump's diplomatic approach as theater diplomacy. Meanwhile, President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that external pressures on the country have reached their maximum.
