President Donald Trump has pivoted toward economic pressure and reopening the Strait of Hormuz as the conflict with Iran enters its sixth month.
Six months after launching a war against Iran in February 2026, Donald Trump and his administration have shifted strategic goals as the conflict persists. While the United States and Israel established air superiority and degraded Iran's navy, air force, and defense industrial base, several primary objectives remain unfulfilled.
A June memorandum of understanding intended to end the hostilities has collapsed. As weapon stockpiles diminish, the U.S. has pivoted toward economic pressure. Current priorities include managing Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has utilized as a global economic chokepoint.
Despite claims from the administration that Iran's missiles are decimated and its nuclear program is obliterated, Iran continues to launch drone strikes. In a related theater, Hezbollah has refused to disarm despite a U.S.-mediated agreement for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon.
