Trump Maintains Hormuz Blockade as Iran Faces Economic Collapse

President Donald Trump is using a naval blockade and sanctions to cripple Iran's economy while mediators attempt to broker a diplomatic resolution.

President Donald Trump has shifted U.S. strategy in the six-month conflict with Iran, moving from direct military strikes to a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and an intensified economic campaign. Through Operation Economic Outcast, the administration aims to deny Tehran the revenue needed to project power, resulting in a free-falling rial and massive inflation for essential goods and medicine.

U.S. Central Command reports that American forces have cleared Iranian sea mines from international shipping lanes, allowing approximately 1,500 commercial vessels to transport 750 million barrels of crude oil. While the administration claims total control over the waterway and asserts that Iran has exported zero oil since July, some shipping data suggests a significant decline in vessel traffic compared to pre-conflict levels. U.S. officials note that shipping has partially recovered to 10 million barrels per day via a southern channel near Oman.

In Tehran, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have called for a return to dialogue and the resumption of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. Mediators from Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman have increased engagement to break the deadlock. However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that no negotiations are currently happening and that the U.S. will maintain pressure until the Iranian regime comes to the table in a meaningful way.
