Keir Starmer Urges Common European Security Framework

Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for a pan-European security framework, warning that the United States will no longer bankroll European defense.

Former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called for the establishment of a common European security framework during a British Irish Chamber of Commerce dinner in Dublin. Starmer warned that the shift in defense relations with the United States is a permanent change rather than a temporary aberration of the Donald Trump presidency, asserting that the U.S. will no longer bankroll European security.

Starmer argued that Europe was "caught asleep" twice: first by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and second by President Trump's demands for allies to shoulder more of the defense burden. While he maintained that the military and intelligence alliance between the UK and USA remains strong, he stated that the European Union cannot manage security alone and that the UK must be at the heart of pan-European cooperation.

Beyond security, Starmer advocated for closer economic ties, noting that Brexit caused "deep damage" to the UK economy. This position aligns with current Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who plans to be bolder regarding EU relations and will attend an EU-UK summit next month to discuss energy, food standards, and youth mobility. Simultaneously, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting reaffirmed the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine during a meeting of European defense ministers in Paris.
