Melania Trump Brokers Oleshky Ceasefire for Civilian Evacuations
First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky, enabling the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of hundreds of stranded civilians.
First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied city of Oleshky to facilitate humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations. The truce, which took effect on October 27 and is scheduled to last until November 1, was supported by Pope Leo XIV and coordinated through negotiations between Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russian Commissioner Yana Lantratova.
On October 30, a joint humanitarian convoy consisting of 25 buses and nine ambulances entered Oleshky to provide food, medicine, and fuel to a population that had dwindled from 24,000 to approximately 2,000 residents. Melania Trump stated the operation safely evacuated more than 750 people. Due to the impassable Dnipro river frontline, evacuees bound for Ukraine followed a circuitous route through Crimea, Anapa, Russia, and Gomel, Belarus.
While the Oleshky truce held, broader hostilities intensified. Russia launched massive missile and drone strikes against Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, including a deadly attack on a Dnipro railway station that killed 15 people. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned these strikes as a signal of Russia's desire to continue the war. Simultaneously, President Donald Trump waived several Russia-related sanctions and resumed Russian diesel imports to the U.S.
This humanitarian pause precedes scheduled trilateral peace talks between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi for early November. While some Ukrainian officials described the Oleshky mission as the largest de-escalation since 2022, the Kremlin characterized it as an isolated event difficult to extrapolate to a broader peace settlement.
