Melania Trump Brokers Humanitarian Ceasefire to Evacuate Oleshky

First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire in Oleshky, Ukraine, enabling the evacuation of hundreds of civilians and the delivery of emergency aid.

First Lady Melania Trump brokered a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, which took effect on October 27, 2026. Acting as the exclusive intermediary, she coordinated with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to facilitate the delivery of food, medicine, and fuel to approximately 2,000 stranded residents who had faced severe starvation and a total lack of basic utilities since May.

The truce, supported by Pope Leo XIV, was expanded to cover the broader Kherson region to ensure safe passage for humanitarian convoys. On October 30, a joint mission led by Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova entered the city with 25 buses and nine ambulances. The operation successfully evacuated more than 750 people, many of whom traveled a circuitous route through Crimea, Anapa, Russia, and Gomel, Belarus, before returning to Ukrainian-controlled territory in the Chernihiv region.

While the ceasefire held in the Oleshky sector until its expiration on November 1, broader hostilities continued. Russia launched massive ballistic missile and drone strikes against Kyiv and Kharkiv, while Ukraine targeted Russian oil refineries and military sites. Despite these escalations, both nations agreed to organize regular humanitarian missions in Oleshky. This localized de-escalation occurs as the United States, Russia, and Ukraine prepare for trilateral peace talks scheduled for November in Abu Dhabi.
