Zelenskyy Seeks Peace Deal Before Winter via Trump

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for an end to the war with Russia before winter during a meeting at the United Nations, stating that U.S. President Donald Trump could help facilitate a deal. The Trump administration has attempted to restart stalled negotiations using special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who recently visited Moscow and Kyiv.

Despite these efforts, significant disagreements persist over the venue for direct talks. The Kremlin maintains that an invitation for Zelenskyy to visit Moscow remains open, with President Vladimir Putin insisting any meeting occur there. Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected Moscow, proposing neutral locations such as Turkey, Switzerland, or the United Arab Emirates, and suggesting a meeting at the G20 summit in Miami in December, which Russia rejected as impossible.

Diplomatic friction remains high as Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede most of the Donbas region, remain neutral regarding NATO, and limit its military size. While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated mutual interest in a limited ceasefire to protect grain and energy sectors, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Moscow will not pause fighting. Both nations have escalated air and drone strikes on energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
