Zelensky Warns Russian Airspace Unsafe as Putin Claims Victory

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned international airlines, insurers, and airport operators on September 1, 2026, that Russian airspace is becoming completely unsafe. He stated that while Ukraine does not target civilian aviation, the scale of Ukrainian drone operations poses a significant risk to innocent lives and will effectively close Russian skies. Zelensky noted that Ukraine had previously suspended attacks on Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Vladivostok at the request of the United States and another global power to facilitate diplomacy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by labeling the warnings as state terrorism and asserting there can be no negotiations with terrorists. Speaking after a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Putin claimed Russian advances are accelerating, citing the capture of 270 square kilometers in the Donetsk region and the liberation of Svyatogorsk. He dismissed rumors of new military mobilization as nonsense but warned of upcoming massive strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Despite the escalation, Putin expressed openness to concrete talks to end the war, specifically welcoming envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Meanwhile, Putin denied accusations from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Russia was responsible for a drone attack at Leipzig airport, claiming the evidence was planted to distract from German domestic issues.
