Trump Scraps Food Tariffs to Combat Rising Grocery Costs

President Donald Trump launched Operation Affordability in November 2025, signing a series of executive orders to eliminate or reduce reciprocal tariffs on over 200 agricultural and food products. The rollback targets staples including beef, coffee, bananas, cocoa, and tropical fruits, as well as key fertilizers. The administration stated these goods cannot be produced in sufficient quantities domestically, and the move aims to lower grocery bills for American consumers following double-digit price spikes in beef and coffee.

This policy shift follows Republican electoral losses in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, where voters cited economic affordability as a primary concern. To further mitigate inflation, Trump proposed $2,000 tariff rebate checks for lower- and middle-income Americans in 2026. Concurrently, the administration secured trade framework agreements with Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Guatemala to reduce non-tariff barriers and provide reciprocal market access for U.S. exports. A separate deal with Switzerland reduced tariffs on Swiss goods from 39% to 15% in exchange for a $200 billion investment pledge in U.S. pharmaceuticals and gold smelting.

In late November, Trump expanded these exemptions to include Brazil, removing a 40% punitive tariff imposed in July following the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. While the White House frames these actions as a result of successful diplomacy and reciprocal trade, Democratic lawmakers characterized the retreat as a tacit admission that the administration's trade war fueled inflation. The Supreme Court of the United States continues to review the legality of the president's unilateral authority to impose such tariffs.
