Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canada Amid Wildfire Dispute

President Donald Trump signed three executive orders on July 20, 2026, imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian imports, effective August 19. Invoking Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, the administration cited discriminatory Canadian policies regarding American dairy, automotive, and alcohol products. The measures target items such as wine, cement, and hockey sticks, while exempting energy, potash, and critical minerals. The White House noted that these tariffs apply regardless of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which the U.S. declined to renew on July 1.

Parallel to the trade dispute, Trump accused Canada of "willful negligence" in forest management after massive wildfires in Ontario and British Columbia sent hazardous smoke into 18 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.
