US Senate Passes Russia Tariffs as Drone Warfare Escalates

The United States Senate passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026 on August 7, imposing 100% tariffs on U.S. imports from the five largest importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas. This legislative move coincides with a surge in aerial warfare, as Volodymyr Zelenskyy initiated a 40-day campaign of deep drone strikes into Russian territory. Ukrainian forces targeted oil refineries, power substations, and a Wildberries logistics facility in Yekaterinburg, destroying roughly one-fifth of the company's total warehouse capacity.

Russia responded with intensified nightly mass aerial assaults. Russian forces struck seven Ukrnafta facilities and Naftogaz sites, causing widespread power outages. Recent weekend strikes killed two people in Kharkiv and three in the Belgorod region. United Nations data indicates a significant rise in violence, recording at least 1,396 civilian deaths in Ukraine during the first half of 2026.

On the ground, Russian forces are attempting to advance in the Pokrovsk and Dobropillya directions. Meanwhile, an August 1 IED explosion in Moscow killed Russian Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk. Despite the escalation, Ukraine faces equipment shortages; President Donald Trump recently walked back a promise to allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot interceptors locally, and the U.S. Congress has not passed new major aid packages under the current administration.
