European Allies Reject U.S. Plan to Unfreeze Russian Assets
European nations rejected a United States proposal to unfreeze Russian sovereign assets to facilitate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
The Federal government of the United States proposed that European nations unfreeze a portion of Russian sovereign assets to revive peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. During discussions in Miami last week, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and negotiator Jared Kushner presented the plan to officials from Ukraine, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and NATO.
The proposal suggested transferring the assets into a financial vehicle overseen by Washington. European delegates rejected the plan, which concerns approximately €260 billion of Russian state assets frozen in 2022, the majority of which are held within the European Union.
The rejection has led officials in Kyiv and various European capitals to question U.S. intentions and the broader strategy for pressing Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine.
