Trump Calls for Peace as Zelenskyy Resumes Energy Strikes
Donald Trump urged an end to the Russia-Ukraine war while Volodymyr Zelenskyy resumed strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, citing ceasefire violations.
President Donald Trump stated on October 17 that he wants the Russia-Ukraine war to end, claiming that both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy desire a conclusion to the conflict. Trump had previously announced an energy ceasefire on October 11, but the agreement collapsed shortly after.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disputed Trump's assessment, asserting that Putin is playing "word games" and lacks a genuine desire for peace. Zelenskyy ended Ukraine's pause on strikes against Russian energy infrastructure on October 15, alleging that Moscow violated the ceasefire. He further warned against easing sanctions on Russia and cautioned that Russian drone activity poses a security risk to NATO members.
President Vladimir Putin claimed Russian forces captured over 1,300 square kilometers in Donbas and Novorossiya during September. Putin ruled out discussing a security zone along Russia's border in any potential peace talks, stating that ensuring the absolute security of border territories is a non-negotiable task.
