Democrats Sweep All Texas Statewide Offices in Historic Victory

Democratic candidates won every statewide race in Texas, electing Gina Hinojosa as the first Latina governor and James Talarico to the U.S. Senate.

Democratic candidates achieved a historic sweep of every statewide office in Texas during the November 2026 elections, winning the governorship, a U.S. Senate seat, and all state commissioner and high court races. Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term Governor Greg Abbott to become the first Hispanic female governor of the state. Other key victories included State Representative Vikki Goodwin for lieutenant governor and State Senator Nathan Johnson for attorney general. Democrats also flipped the Texas House of Representatives for the first time since 2002.

James Talarico won a U.S. Senate seat by nearly 10 percentage points, defeating Attorney General Ken Paxton. Talarico's victory came despite approximately $200 million in spending from Elon Musk. He attributed the win to a "politics of love" and a rejection of the Washington establishment. While Talarico criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a "secret police force," he expressed a willingness to work with President Donald Trump on housing and immigration reform.

Outgoing Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick conceded their losses, with Patrick stating the election was fair. Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder attributed the sweep to a 254-county infrastructure strategy and a populist appeal to Latino voters in the Rio Grande Valley. The new leadership plans to prioritize property tax reduction, corruption reform, and the rollback of school voucher programs. This shift mirrored a broader national trend where Democrats gained control of the U.S. Congress and won governorships in several other states, including Ohio and Georgia.
