Russia and Ukraine Exchange Massive Drone and Missile Strikes

Russia and Ukraine entered an intensified phase of aerial warfare between August 5 and 6, 2026, characterized by mass missile barrages and strategic drone strikes. A major Russian assault on August 5 targeted Kyiv and surrounding regions with 28 missiles—including 24 ballistic and four hypersonic—and 115 drones. The attack killed at least 17 people and injured 44, with significant casualties reported at a commuter station in Brovary. While Ukraine intercepted most drones, the Air Force reported that no ballistic missiles were shot down due to a critical shortage of Patriot interceptors. Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed these failures to delays in Western military aid and appealed to Donald Trump and NATO for urgent supplies.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces launched wide-scale drone strikes against Russian infrastructure. These attacks targeted oil refineries in Yaroslavl and Bashkortostan, as well as multiple logistics centers belonging to the retailer Wildberries in regions including Tula, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. In Yaroslavl, falling debris from 93 intercepted drones sparked fires at the Slavneft-Yanos refinery. Russian officials reported shooting down a total of 605 Ukrainian drones on August 6.

Beyond the strategic strikes, Ukraine accused Russia of conducting "human safaris" in Kherson, releasing footage of drones deliberately hunting civilians. In response to the escalating crisis, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the transfer of €1.4 billion from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense. Meanwhile, U.S. officials indicated that a long-term production deal for Patriot missiles would not be finalized by winter.
