Russia Strikes Kyiv as Ukraine Hits Tula Region

Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Kyiv and surrounding areas on August 5, 2026, using 115 drones and 28 missiles, including 24 ballistic missiles and four Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles. The strikes killed 17 people and injured 44, damaging residential buildings, warehouses, and a railway station. In the Holosiivskyi district, a hit on a specialized tank caused a chemical emergency involving 300 liters of ammonia, which emergency crews contained by 2:10 a.m.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the Air Force of Ukraine intercepted 98 drones, but no missiles were shot down. He attributed the high casualties to a shortage of ballistic interceptors and called on the G7 and EU for more air defense systems and stricter sanctions on Russian missile production. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the targets were logistics and distribution centers for drone components and electronic warfare systems.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian drones targeted the Tula region of Russia, hitting two apartment buildings in the Venyovsky district and industrial sites in Novomoskovsk and Uzlovsky. A Wildberries sorting center also caught fire following a strike. Tula Governor Dmitry Milyayev reported no fatalities and one injury, noting that Russian forces destroyed 107 Ukrainian drones during the attack. This exchange reflects an intensifying air war where Russia leverages industrial scale and Ukraine targets Russian economic infrastructure to force a ceasefire.
