Trump Administration Offers Business Deals to Russia to End War
Donald Trump is shifting strategy by offering business incentives to Russia to entice a ceasefire, while Congress implements strict energy sanctions.
The Donald Trump administration is shifting its strategy to end the war in Ukraine by considering business deals for Russia before a ceasefire is reached. Led by envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, this approach aims to entice Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite to push for peace. This marks a departure from Trump's previous position that business deals would only follow a formal settlement.
This incentive-based strategy coincides with a bipartisan sanctions bill passed by the United States Congress. The legislation targets Russia's energy sector and allows tariffs of up to 100 percent on buyers of Russian oil and gas to compel a compromise.
Negotiations currently face an impasse because Ukraine refuses to withdraw from territories demanded by Putin. While the White House seeks creative solutions, Ukrainian allies remain skeptical. Trilateral peace talks between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia are expected to resume in October, with potential discussions on limited ceasefires regarding Black Sea shipping and energy infrastructure.
