Turkey and UN Broker Black Sea Ceasefire Talks
Turkey and the United Nations organized talks for early October to negotiate a Black Sea ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to protect global grain shipments.
Turkey and the United Nations have organized negotiations scheduled for early October to establish a Black Sea ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The initiative, mediated by the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, seeks to protect grain shipments and stabilize global food prices that hit three-year highs in August following port attacks and poor weather.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, reported a positive response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the effort to replicate a 2022 grain corridor agreement. However, Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi countered that there are no positive signs for a deal in the coming months.
Russia has conditioned its participation on sanctions relief and military concessions. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described a return to the 2022 terms as unrealistic. President Vladimir Putin stated that while Ukrainian proposals to halt attacks remain on the table, Russia will decide its response based on its own interests.
