BRICS Summit Ends With US Dollar Affirmation Amid Divisions

The 17th annual BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro concluded with a joint declaration that signaled internal division and a retreat from challenging Western economic dominance. While members adopted commitments on climate change, finance, and global governance, the bloc failed to reach a consensus on several high-profile initiatives.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hosted the event, which was marked by the absence of China's Xi Jinping and the virtual attendance of Russia's Vladimir Putin, who remained absent in person due to an International Criminal Court arrest warrant. A proposal for a common currency to rival the US dollar stalled after US President Donald Trump warned that countries pursuing anti-American policies or attempting to replace the dollar would face tariffs between 10% and 100%. As a result, the final declaration affirmed the global importance of the US dollar.

Internal friction further hampered the summit. Egypt and Ethiopia blocked proposals to grant permanent UN Security Council seats to Brazil, India, and South Africa. Additionally, the bloc remained split over the Israel-Palestine conflict, as Iran advocated for a one-state solution while other members supported a two-state resolution. India also showed reluctance toward a common currency, citing concerns over Chinese influence and its own trade ties with the United States.
