Vladimir Putin Orders Strikes on Ukraine and Threatens UK

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered large-scale military strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities in retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks on the Ust-Luga fuel terminal and other oil refineries. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin warned Russian citizens to be prepared for anything and explicitly ruled out peace talks, accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of state terrorism.

Tensions expanded beyond Ukraine as Putin and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that British military industrial facilities could become targets after the UK provided classified long-range missile blueprints to Ukraine. Simultaneously, Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev suggested direct strikes on Berlin and German military production facilities.

Germany has accused Russia of conducting a hybrid campaign of sabotage and cyberattacks. The German government cited an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4 and rocket strikes near a power plant in Brandenburg, leading Germany to shut down a Russian consulate. Russia denies these charges.

In a separate geopolitical move, Putin pledged continued assistance to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to oppose U.S. sanctions. Reports indicate Russia has secretly supported Iranian missile development since 2023 under program C430L, aiding the creation of the Castle Breaker ballistic missile designed to target U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
